Mount Kilimanjaro Most Popular FAQs

How long does it take to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro typically takes between 6 and 9 days, depending on the route you choose. Longer routes like Lemosho and Northern Circuit offer better acclimatization and higher summit success rates. Shorter routes are faster but increase the risk of altitude sickness. Most climbers complete the trek comfortably in 7 or 8 days.

The best times to climb are during the dry seasons: January–March and June–October. These months offer clearer skies, stable weather, and better trail conditions. While climbing is possible year-round, the rainy seasons (April–May and November) bring slippery trails and limited visibility, making the journey more challenging.

No technical climbing skills are required, but good physical fitness is essential. Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek, so stamina, mental preparation, and proper acclimatization are key. Training with long walks, strength exercises, and cardio several weeks before your trip will greatly improve your chances of reaching the summit.

Temperatures vary by altitude and time of day. At the summit, it can drop to -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F), especially during the night. Lower camps are milder but still chilly. Proper layered clothing, warm gloves, and a good-quality sleeping bag are essential to stay comfortable.
