Overview of the Lemosho route

Lemosho is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and highly regarded routes, and its popularity continues to grow for good reason. It provides spectacular views, an excellent acclimatization profile, and some of the highest summit success rates on the mountain. Beginning on Kilimanjaro’s western slopes, Lemosho can be trekked in 6-, 7-, or 8-day itineraries. A major highlight of this route is Cathedral Peak—one of the highest points of the Shira Plateau at 3,872 m (12,703 ft)—where trekkers enjoy an acclimatization hike with breathtaking panoramas. The trail is also known for its unique giant plants, Dendrosenecio kilimanjari, found only on Kilimanjaro. Notably, Angela Vorobieva, at age 86, reached the summit via the Lemosho route with Trans Kibo Travel, earning a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to climb Kilimanjaro.

Lemosho Route Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your adventure begins at Lemosho Gate (2,100 m), where you complete registration before entering the lush rainforest. The trail is gentle with chances to spot colobus monkeys and beautiful forest vegetation. After a 3–4 hour trek, you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, you climb out of the forest and enter the heather and moorland zone. The trail gradually ascends to the Shira Plateau, offering impressive views of Shira Ridge. Trekking takes 6–7 hours, ending at Shira 1 Camp (3,610 m).

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Today is a shorter acclimatization trek across the plateau, giving you time to adjust to the altitude. The scenery opens up with panoramic views of Kibo Peak. In the afternoon, you may take an optional acclimatization hike. Overnight at Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m).

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This is an important acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower (4,630 m) for lunch, allowing your body to adjust before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). The descent offers great views of the Western Breach and the famous giant groundsels. Trekking time: 6–7 hours.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Begin by conquering the iconic Barranco Wall, a fun, non-technical climb with stunning views from the top. Continue through the Karanga Valley and gradually ascend to Barafu Camp (4,680 m), your base for the summit attempt. Rest early and prepare for the midnight climb.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak & Descent to Mweka Camp

Your summit push begins around midnight. Climb steadily to Stella Point (5,756 m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend through Barafu to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for overnight.
