12 Days 7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your driver will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi at The Maridadi Hotel (or similar). In the evening, you’ll meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check. Take the rest of the day to relax and prepare for your adventure.
Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,640 m) – Machame Camp (2,835 m)

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration. The hike begins in lush rainforest with rich vegetation and occasional wildlife sightings, including blue monkeys. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp, where your tents will be ready and dinner will be served.

Day 3: Machame Camp (2,835 m) – Shira Camp (3,750 m)

Today’s hike is steeper as you leave the forest and enter the heath and moorland zone. You’ll cross rocky ridges and enjoy panoramic views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak. You arrive at Shira Camp, positioned on an open, scenic plateau.

Day 4: Shira Camp (3,750 m) – Lava Tower (4,630 m) – Barranco Camp (3,976 m)

This is an important acclimatisation day. You ascend gradually to Lava Tower for lunch at 4,630 m, helping your body adjust to the altitude. From Lava Tower, the trail descends into the beautiful Barranco Valley, surrounded by giant groundsels and dramatic cliffs. You overnight at Barranco Camp, one of the most iconic camps on the mountain.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,976 m) – Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

The day starts with the exciting climb of the Barranco Wall, offering rewarding views from the top. The trail then continues through alpine desert, with gentle ascents and descents leading to Karanga Camp. This shorter day is designed specifically for acclimatization, helping prepare your body for the summit push.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035 m) – Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

After breakfast, you continue upward toward Barafu Camp, hiking through the alpine desert. Barafu serves as the basecamp for your summit attempt. You’ll have an early dinner and rest, preparing for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp (3,080 m)

Summit day begins around midnight. You climb steadily toward Stella Point, then walk along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,080 m) – Mweka Gate (1,640 m) – Moshi/Arusha

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved celebration and rest.
